Cllr. Nicholas Bennett JP

Cllr Nicholas Bennett JP has represented West Wickham ward since 2006. He is retiring from the council at the next election in 2026. He is cabinet member for Transport Highways and Road Safety .Cllr Bennett was Mayor of Bromley 2019-20 and before that chaired the Education Committee for seven years.
He retired: after 25 years’ service as a presiding justice in Bromley Magistrates Court on reaching the statutory retiring age in May 2024
 
Cllr Bennett was first elected to public office in 1974 at 24 when he became one of 11 Conservative councillors on neighbouring Lewisham Council. He was Leader of the Opposition in his second four-year term and a co-opted member of the Inner London Education Authority.
 
At the General Election in 1987 he was elected MP for Pembroke and three years later was appointed Welsh Office minister with responsibility for health, local government, social care and housing.
 
Cllr Bennett was educated at Sedgehill Comprehensive School in Bellingham and the Universities of London and Sussex. He taught in London and Kent secondary schools and was deputy head of Christchurch School, Chatham before his election to parliament.
 
He lives with his wife Ruth and four cats in Bromley.
